POLYESTER RESIN
Polyester resins
About polyester resin. Characteristics and points of strength
The polyester resins are a large family of synthetic organic polymers, formed by a group of heterogeneous molecules for both chemical structure and property. The resins belonging to this group are found normally in the liquid state (more or less viscous) and tend to harden with the addition of suitable peroxides, also called catalysts. They are produced through a process called polycondensation, a chemical reaction that occurs between polybasic acids and polyhydric alcohols. The final characteristics of the polyester resin, such as flexibility, rigidity and strength, are largely determined by the raw materials that are added in the preparation phase. Among the most used, we need to remember the isophthalic acid and the neopentyl glycol.Where polyester resins are used: application fields
Thanks to their physical-chemical properties and their structure, this family of resins is used in many production sectors:- In the construction industry: the polyester resins are used for the production of windows and doors frames, formworks, panoramic windows, pipes and bulkheads.
- In the nautical sector: the resins are mainly used in the production of leisure boats, which are made up of this material in about 90% of the vessels. The resins used in this sector are often reinforced with the addition of specific additives.
- In the transport industry: the resistance of the polyester resins is particularly versatile for the production of components of vehicles and heavy means of transport or work, such as agricultural machines, trucks, railway carriages or buses.
